And yet cosy wine taverns, traditional guesthouses, unique accommodation providers and exciting excursion destinations offer everything needed for a stay in the Dunkelsteinerwald. This situation has led to the Dunkelsteinerwald working group, in conjunction with tourism-related establishments in the region, to develop bookable offers and present businesses and services in an appropriate manner.
In 2014, the creation of the Dunkelsteinerwald Loop Trail succeeded in establishing a product of importance to tourism and local recreation in the Dunkelsteinerwald. Nevertheless, the Dunkelsteinerwald is still considered to be a secret tip amongst day-trippers and holidaymakers and offers only a few places to stay overnight. With the residents of the area covering St. Pölten, Krems and Melk and the tourists in the Wachau, potential visitors are already to be found on the edge of the Dunkelsteinerwald. Their attention should be drawn to the range of excursions and short holidays available in the Dunkelsteinerwald in order for them to take “the step into the Dunkelsteinerwald”. Against the background of the project on music in the Dunkelsteinerwald, the presentation of local recreation and holiday activities in the Dunkelsteinerwald is also gaining in importance. The project will be developed and implemented in coordination with the two affected tourism destinations of the Mostviertel (Dunkelsteinerwald, Hafnerbach, Haunoldstein, Neidling) and Donau Niederösterreich (Bergern, Schönbühel-Aggsbach).
